Innova disc golf is a fun game that many people have developed a passion for. The concept is better understood by calling it "Frisbee golf." So, why is this new sport called Innova disc golf instead of "Frisbee golf"? Like "Kleenex," "Frisbee" is a trademark that is registered and cannot be used in conjunction with this game of disc golf because the game was not developed by "Frisbee." In fact, Innova is the company that produces the discs that are used the most in this sport. Frisbee actually makes very few golf discs and is not the leading choice when it comes to disc golf.
Innova disc golf is pretty much like the traditional golf game played with a "ball." The difference between the two games pretty much stops at the pieces used; where in traditional golf you have clubs, a ball and holes in the ground, in disc golf you have a disc that you must throw into a target that is above-ground. Where traditional golf utilizes many different sizes and types of clubs, Innova disc golf utilizes different discs for the different purposes of the game.
The play of the game is simple; throw a disc into a target. The Target is called a "Pole Hole" and it is basically a basket of steel with chains hanging over it. The object is to make a throw of the disc into this basket in the least number of tries. The "drive" begins from a designated area of trees and then continues in the direction of the target by throwing shots from the spot where the previous thrown disc landed. When the player gets near enough to the target, or hole, they can then "putt" it into the basket. A successful "putt" will produce the most satisfying "ching" sound due to the chains and steel of the "Pole Hole."
The Innova disc golf course has between 18 and 24 holes with a rare find of a nine-hole course or two. The length of the holes can vary greatly from course to course but are generally in the 150-feet to 500-feet range. And, as in traditional golf, there are traps to avoid such as terrain, shrubbery, trees and water. It is a lot easier to replace your lost disc than your nine-iron at prices that range between $7 and $15.
This deices themselves do not lend well to playing a game of catch or for freestyle trick play. The discs have sharper edges which may hurt a bit in a game of catch and the discs used for beach or backyard play are rather bulky in comparison to the Innova disc golf discs and are not suitable for driving long distances.
The game is quite popular with approximately 500,000 people who play regularly and always welcome new players to the game. The game of disc golf was predominantly dominated by males between the ages of 18 to 54 but has expanded to include a number of women and whole families.
